Notes

  • Worked top-down, in continuous rounds.

  • Make brim taller/ shorter: start with more/ fewer chains (e.g. Ch 15 for 4” fold).

  • Slouchy style: Add 3-4 more cm of Moss Stitch round before ribbing.

  • Colour change: crown in one colour and body in another, or use multiple colours for the Moss Stitch rows. Colour changes in the continuous round end up with some variegated Sts. Therefore, each round can be Slst to avoid this.

Ribbed Brim (Join as You Go: JAYG)

Switch back to Sc for the ribbing. Row 1: Ch 15 (for ~2" brim). Ch less or more as desired for alternative lengths. Starting in 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the back bump of each Ch (14). Slst into next St on hat body, Slst into next St. Turn.

Repeat row 2 -3 around the hat until all ribbing is completed. Keep the ribbing right side out and use Slsts or Whip Stitch to seam the ends together. (The seam will be inside as the brim is folded to wear. If making a shorter/ normal brim, then stitch on the wrong side out.) Ch 1 and fasten off with a tail to weave in.

Weave in all the tails. Wet or steam block to relax the fibres. Enjoy your new creation.
